One New York Dragon + One Boston Phoenix = Scorching heat
Jayce Fierro is part of a legendary Boston firefighting family of phoenix shifters. Hiding his true form makes being in a relationship rather difficult. Meeting the beautiful Lieutenant Kristine Scott of the New York City Fire Department and knowing he can’t have her only makes things worse.
Dragon shifter Kristine can’t stop thinking about fun, flirty Jayce and his teasing smile. A relationship could never work-not with the distance between them, and definitely not with her shifter secret. But when Kristine lands herself in a blaze of trouble and secrets are revealed, Jayce will do whatever it takes to help-whether or not the feisty, stubborn New Yorker wants him to.
Boston Dragons Series:
I Dream of Dragons (Book 1)
My Wild Irish Dragon (Book 2)
Never Dare a Dragon (Book 3)
The title Never Dare a Dragon sounds very promising. And since I really like shapeshifter stories, I was really excited to get the arc from Netgalley. But have you ever looked at the face of a little child when they get the surprisebox at a fastfood restaurant? The child goes through several fases: 1) falls in love with the great poster of the toys which will be in the box. 2) starts pleading when you are in line to order: “Can I puh-lease get the surprisebox???” 3) is jumping up and down: “when is it ready… Can I get it already…” 4) is following you to the table, nearly knocking all other things from your hands. 5) opens the box and pulls the toy out of the box. 6) realizes it is just a piece of plastic… 7) eats the contents of the surprisebox and decides to play with the toy for the next few minutes.
Well… that was pretty much my experience with this book. I looked very good (I mean: look at that cover…), the title got to me and the blurb was very promising. So I really, really wanted to read it. (Puh-lease Netgalley, will you give me a copy….). And I jumped up and down, when my request was granted, dropping all my other books and starting on this one directly.
And it was a good read. Jayce is a very hunky dory guy with only one strange feature: you can torch him and he will go up in flames. Only to revive from the ashes as a bird. A Phoenix bird to be precise. And he can phase from bird to man and back again. No biggy. Well, it does come in handy when you are a Boston firefighter.
On the other had, we have Kristine, who is also a firefighter (only in New York) and who is also very fireproof, because she is actually a dragon. They meet, sparks are flying (literally this time…) and to make matters more interesting: Kristine’s mother is also a dragon who is kidnapped…
The story flows easily, Jayce and Kristine find out each other secrets and they go after the kidnappers of her mother. So, we have action, excitement, tender love and care. All ingredients are there. But after ending the book: it still left me a bit unsatisfied. Like the fastfood: you are in need of more…
But hey, some fastfood every now and then is just great! Three out of five stars from me. And a thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
