Book 13 of the Vampires in America Series
Scotland—sweeping forests, tumbling waterfalls. . .and towering highlands where vampire warriors have ruled for centuries.
Lethal and charismatic, vampire Lachlan McRae woke on his first night to death and devastation—his clan slaughtered, his fortress destroyed. One hundred and fifty years later, driven to avenge the murder of everyone he loved, he’s ready to hunt down and kill the one vampire who was behind it all—Erskine Ross, the Vampire Lord of Scotland.
Beautiful, smart, and cool under pressure, Julia Harper is determined to prove she’s more than a child of wealth and privilege. When a lifelong friend is murdered by vampires, she steps out of her role as an analyst for the CIA, and sets out to take down one of the most powerful men in Scotland—the deadly Erskine Ross.
Recruited by a friend to arrange contact between Lachlan and her best friend Cyn’s mate, the powerful Vampire Lord Raphael, Julia soon discovers that she and Lachlan want the same thing . . . Erskine’s death. But when Erskine sets out to kill Julia instead, she and Lachlan find themselves fighting for her life, and for a love that neither one of them can trust.
Okay… I admit: I just love vampires. So when I saw D.B. Reynolds new book, I just had to request it. Although I haven’t read the total series, you can easily read this book as a standalone. D.B. Reynolds has different series (Vampires in America, Vampires in Europe, Stone Warriors), but basically the characters flow through the series. So, also in this book about Lachlan, a Scottish vampire, we meet Raphael and his Cyn. Since Raphael is the most powerful vampire, everyone tries to get on the same page with Raphael. Because if you don’t you probably end up as dust.
Lachlan is hell bent on getting revenge on Erskine, a faul vampire who has wiped out most of Lachlan’s clan some two hundred years ago. But now, Lachlan is on the verge of reclaiming Scotland as his territory. To be sure he isn’t getting problems with Raphael, who has been killing vampire lords in France recently, he needs to contact him. But how? When a fearless little blond woman is trying to persuade him to help her kill Erskine, she offers him a connection to Raphael. Being raised at a private school together with Cynthia, she knows her connection to Raphael. And since her best friend Masoud was killed by a vampire, she needs Cynthia and Raphael to help her avenge Masoud’s death. But her work for the CIA makes Raphael wary and therefore she needs Lachlan to go to Raphael to convince him that Erskine needs to be killed.
She didn’t anticipate Raphael to order her to come with Lachlan to America. Thrown together for a journey with only one purpose, they soon find out what the motives of the other are for wanting Erskine’s death. But are they both totally honest? And why is Erskine suddenly trying to kill Julia first? Find out for yourselves in this suspense story. Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
