Life and death is a delicate balancing act—and only the brave survive.
Dragon eggs are disappearing from the High Mountains aeries. The South Kingdom seeks to replicate the dragon riders of Torvald to stem the Deadweed that strikes out like living beings. They’ll pay the Dragon Traders handsomely for every egg they capture, for only dragon fire has proven effective at turning back the invasive plant. Until the deadly scourge magically returns with a vengeance.
From the moment fifteen-year-old Dayie washed ashore as an infant, everyone recognized she was different. Animals took to her instantly. Wounds healed and plants grew larger in her presence. But after she’s blamed her for the vicious Deadweed attack, the villagers sell her to the ruthless Dragon Traders for fear of her powers and mysterious origin. When Dayie makes the dangerous mountain climb and steals a dragon egg, she winds up with more than she bargained for when the dragon hatches and bonds with her before she can return. She’s forced to hide the hotheaded young dragon or risk losing him to merciless patrols or the Deadweed creeping ever southward. But he’s soon discovered when the Deadweed attacks and their rescuer reveals the magic behind the ever-spreading menace. Now Dayie must either give up her dragon or take her place in the Training Hall of Dagban, where bonding is misunderstood and discord between dragon and rider reigns.
In order to embrace her destiny, Dayie must find balance in this epic dragon fantasy.
I hadn’t read any books from Ava Richardson and I almost overlooked the cover of Dragon Called on Netgalley, because it looked kind of outdated to me. However, I was intrigued by the blurb and therefore I requested the arc. Glad that I did. Because you get sucked into the story right away, when you meet Dayie. She is a slave girl, who was ordered to go and steal a dragon’s egg. After stealing (and almost getting caught) she has to flee the city with her bosses. They are heading towards the south, to the Training Hall, where Dragon Riders are trained, to sell the egg.
During their travel, however, the egg already hatches. And Thump, the red dragon, bonds with Dayie. Determined to become a Dragon Rider herself, to avenge her parent’s death, she travels further to the south. Her parents where killed by Deadweed, a killing kind of plant, which is taking over large parts of the country. Only dragonfire seems to be able to kill it.
Can Dayie become a Dragon Rider and fulfill her destiny? Find out for yourself in this wonderful read. Skillfully written, you can’t help but admire Dayie for standing up for herself and trying to make a difference in the world. Can’t wait for the next part in the series. Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
